Club de Golf Terramar was founded in 1922 and the course opened in 1927, making it one of the oldest clubs in Catalonia and the only one directly on the Mediterranean coast. It sits at the western edge of Sitges, the glamorous seaside town 35 minutes south of Barcelona, with several holes running parallel to the beach and the sea visible from most of the layout.
The original course was designed by Tom Simpson, one of the most influential British golf architects of the early 20th century. Simpson's other works include Morfontaine (France), Cruden Bay (Scotland), and Ballybunion (Ireland) - all courses that remain in the world rankings today. His Terramar design combined parkland and coastal elements, with the classic Simpson principles of strategic bunkering and natural routing.
In recent years the course has been sensitively renovated by Mackenzie & Ebert, the British firm best known for their work at Royal Birkdale, Royal Portrush, Turnberry, and other Open Championship venues. The renovation preserved Simpson's original routing while modernising the greens, bunkers, and irrigation.
The course plays through umbrella pines, palms, and open coastal terrain. Several holes offer direct sea views, and the signature finish includes holes that hug the Mediterranean coast. At par 72 the course is not long, but the coastal wind and the strategic bunkering make it a legitimate test. Conditioning is maintained year-round thanks to the mild climate and 300+ days of sunshine.
Beyond golf, Terramar is a family social club with tennis, padel, restaurant, and an academy. But its real advantage is location: Sitges is one of the most beautiful towns on the Mediterranean, with a well-preserved old town, excellent seafood restaurants, museums, and vibrant nightlife. Many visitors combine a morning round at Terramar with an afternoon and evening in Sitges itself.
