Fontanals Golf Club sits in the Cerdanya, the broad high-altitude valley that straddles the Spanish-French border in the eastern Pyrenees. At 1,100 metres elevation, it is one of the few mountain golf courses in Spain and offers something no coastal course can match: cool summer rounds with the Pyrenean peaks rising on every side.
Designed by Ramon Espinosa and opened in 1995, the 18-hole par 72 layout plays across open meadowland with dramatic elevation changes, mature trees, and mountain streams. The air is thinner than at sea level, which means the ball travels further off the tee, a rare advantage. Wide fairways and generous landing areas make the course accessible to players of all levels, but the mountain wind and the visual drama give every round a distinctive character.
More than a golf course, Fontanals is a complete resort with over 25 years of history as a social and family club. The on-site hotel sits alongside the course with views of the Pyrenees. The wellness centre offers a spa and thermal circuit, and the tennis and padel courts, golf academy, and multiple dining options make it a destination for families and non-golfers too. The restaurant focuses on local Cerdanya cuisine, with Puigcerda and the French border 15 minutes away.
Fontanals is a 2-hour drive from Barcelona and 90 minutes from Camiral or Emporda Golf, making it the perfect addition to a Costa Brava trip: a day or two at altitude after the coastal rounds.

How far is Fontanals from Barcelona?+
Approximately two hours by car via the C-16 motorway and the Tunel del Cadi. From the Costa Brava (Camiral, Emporda Golf) it is about 90 minutes. A scenic drive through the Pyrenees foothills.
Can I play at 1,100 metres if I am not used to altitude?+
Yes, easily. 1,100 metres is a very mild altitude and does not affect breathing. The one noticeable effect is that the ball travels further off the tee, which most players find enjoyable.
Is Fontanals suitable in summer?+
Summer is the best time at Fontanals. While the coast can reach 35C, the Cerdanya stays in the mid-20s, making this one of the most comfortable summer rounds in Spain.
Is there accommodation on-site?+
Yes. Fontanals has an on-site hotel with views of the course and the Pyrenees, plus a spa and wellness centre. Ideal for families: non-golfers have tennis, padel, hiking, and nearby Puigcerda.
What else is there to do in the Cerdanya?+
Plenty. The medieval town of Puigcerda (15 min), French villages like Llivia (20 min), hiking in the Pyrenees natural park, the rack railway to Nuria, and excellent restaurants serving Cerdanya cuisine. In winter, the La Molina and Masella ski resorts are 20 minutes away.
